Artemis Pro Filmmaking App Review

In Blog, Colorado DP, Denver Video Company, Denver Video Production by JamesLeave a Comment

Artemis Pro is an incredible tool for any filmmaker! It’s a directors viewfinder filmmaking app that allows you to input your camera specific sensor, choose your lenses and see your true field of view. Artemis Pro is highly accurate giving you a very exact field of view. It also adds a ton of new features and refinements over the already excellent Artemis (now called Artemis Legacy).

FEATURES

Virtual stand in feature

The virtual stand in feature is fantastic, especially if you’re looking to film an interview or medium shots with your talent, this will allow you to place a silhouette of a subject in the frame to see what they’ll cover in the background and size them up relative to the sensor size and lens.

Looks

looks feature

A great set of preprogrammed looks come with Artemis Pro, but you can also create your own with controls over exposure, contrast, tint, and so on. This can be especially useful when you have a particular vision in mind for a project and having that relative to the viewfinder can help visualize the feel more acutely!

Frame lines

frame lines

Absolutely love the frame lines feature. Not only can you overlay framelines, but you can mask off the areas outside of the frame lines at varying opacities from 0 to 100 percent. This is a brilliant feature, very easy to use as you can save your settings and even create custom aspects as needed.

2nd camera

2ndcam feature

Artemis has always been great at the ease of selecting your camera and lens package and now with Artemis Pro you can have two cameras setup for those shoots where you’ll have various sensor sizes in play (I know that happens to us frequently). This is a great time saver and a welcomed feature.

Faster performance

The app has been rewritten from the ground up and definitely feels much faster and responsive from starting the app to switching lenses. We use this app on set all of the time so that boost in performance and snappy response is definitely felt!

Bonus features not mentioned in the video

Wide angle stitching tool

You can now stitch photos together from one perspective that allows you to better visualize wider lenses. For instance you can plug in an 11mm lens on a Red Dragon sensor, the app will guide you through hitting little dots around the center image that will then stitch together and create a wide representation.

Integration with Helios Pro

Helios Pro is a brilliant app by the same developer that helps track the sun, moon and stars. The depth of this program is incredible as you can use AR views to track the sun, have 3D topographical representations of your current location, and all of this integrates with Artemis Pro beautifully.

Special thanks to Dave Dugdale of learningvideo.com for helping me film this!!!

Disclaimer: I was given this app for free, but purchased the original Artemis years ago and used it for years before getting this update
